Grand Prix

It is "man & woman" by Nao Karakida, 4^th grade art university student studying graphic design that being decided to be the top of 29 prize winning works. She rose above the crowd in the heated trial and honorably won the grand prix. Her work, which she "gave impact with boldly putting handwriting-like illustrations", shows a woman on the top and a man on the back. Mr. Elliot Erwitt and Ms. Yayoi Kusama especially gave high marks, Ms. Karakida's work was selected as one crosses the borders.

It’s really amazing to be the top of over 13,000 works.

Her expression is unique. She uses the top and the back of T-shirts very well, and her illustrations match the cloth well. I thought it's very high quality. It's the very work for the gold medal.

I'm so surprised because I've never imagined my work is selected for the grand prix, but I'm really happy. What I considered first when I designed was that what is the most outstanding. Then, I found that there's no one who don't see others' faces, and I decided to layout faces boldly. I had hard time to think how to balance impact and understandability and the size of the faces, but now I'm delighted that lots of people highly estimated my work. People all over the world have the chance to see and wear my work, that gives me great pleasure.

I felt something literary to start a story. This design is, at first glance, difficult to understand. Your challenging mind is also fascinating to me.

I viscerally felt ‘it will make a sale'. Commercial and punk essences unite well in one T-shirt, and besides it has Japanese essence. A really nice work.
